Background of the Study
Widowhood is a life-altering event that often brings about significant psychological stress, particularly in societies where social and economic support systems may be lacking. In Sokoto State, widows face unique challenges, including social stigma, financial instability, and isolation, which can contribute to the development of depression. Depression among widows is an underrecognized public health issue that adversely affects their quality of life and overall well-being (Aliyu, 2023). The loss of a spouse not only leads to emotional distress but can also result in diminished social status and economic hardship, further exacerbating mental health problems.
Social and cultural norms in Sokoto State often place widows in vulnerable positions. In many communities, widows experience marginalization and may be denied access to inheritance or property rights, which compounds their financial difficulties. This socio-economic vulnerability, combined with the psychological impact of loss, creates a fertile ground for depression. Despite the high risk, mental health services remain limited and stigmatized, leaving many widows without adequate support or treatment (Ibrahim, 2024).
Public health education and community support systems play crucial roles in mitigating the mental health impacts of widowhood, yet there is a paucity of research focusing on depression among widows in Sokoto State. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the prevalence of depression among widows and identifying the factors that contribute to their mental health challenges. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, using quantitative screening tools to measure depression levels and qualitative interviews to explore personal experiences and coping strategies. The findings will provide insights into the unique needs of widows and inform the development of targeted mental health interventions and support programs (Bello, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
In Sokoto State, depression among widows is a significant yet under-addressed public health issue. Widows often endure a range of stressors—such as social stigma, economic hardship, and isolation—that contribute to the onset of depression. Despite the high vulnerability of this group, there is limited access to mental health services and support systems. Cultural norms and societal expectations frequently compound their distress, leading to persistent mental health challenges and reduced quality of life (Aliyu, 2023). The stigma surrounding mental illness further discourages widows from seeking help, resulting in a cycle of untreated depression.
Moreover, the lack of empirical data on the prevalence of depression among widows in Sokoto State hinders the development of effective interventions. Current public health strategies do not adequately target this vulnerable group, leaving many widows without the necessary support to cope with their loss. The limited resources allocated to mental health services and the absence of community-based support programs exacerbate the problem, contributing to a growing mental health burden among widows (Ibrahim, 2024).
Without comprehensive research and targeted interventions, the mental health needs of widows will remain unmet, perpetuating social and economic disadvantages. This study aims to address these issues by systematically evaluating the prevalence of depression among widows in Sokoto State and exploring the socio-cultural and economic factors that contribute to their mental health challenges. The results will inform policy recommendations and the design of culturally sensitive mental health support programs tailored to the unique needs of widows.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on widows in both urban and rural communities in Sokoto State. Data will be collected via standardized depression scales, interviews, and focus groups. Limitations include potential self-reporting bias and cultural sensitivity in discussing mental health issues.
